Join us to celebrate Spring with an evening of inspiring music and beautiful melodies performed by Sussex's own orchestra, whose members come from sciences, global studies, media, arts, humanities, medical school and many other schools across the university.
Florence Price (1887-1953) came to national attention in 1933 when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra premiered her Symphony number 1, having never previously performed a classical work by an African American composer. Her stunningly reflective and entrancing composition 'Adoration' was originally conceived for solo organ. This version for violin solo and orchestra brings out the slowly unfolding and developing melodies and harmonies.
Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), Parisian composer, grew up in an intensely musical family. In 1917 with declining health she composed a series of evocative pieces inspired by different times of day and seasons. This piece (Of A Spring Morning) was conceived for violin and piano before being recomposed for orchestra. It is full of life and uses the many vivid contrasts and colours of the orchestra to evoke energy and change characteristic of Spring.
Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) was a Czech Austro-Hungarian composer who created a national idiom by absorbing folk influences and synthesising them in the symphonic tradition. His Symphony No 8 in G major, op. 88 has a warm and optimistic tone, and a lyrical style of great power and feeling. It is in four movements.
