About
KOKOKO!
Co-promoted with African Night Fever
After five incredible world tours and a forced hiatus, KOKOKO! the Congolese Kinshasa-based collective, are back!
Lead by Xavier Thomas aka Débruit and the self-titled 'seigneur de l’ambiance' Makara Bianko, KOKOKO! are an experimental electronic collective producing underground Kinshasa sounds.
With electronic loops, distorted by an overpowered PA and the growling voice of Makara, their new EP has a more percussive and electronic style reflecting the atmosphere of Kinshasa at night. With regular blackouts, the Congolese capital is often in darkness, yet the streets are crowded with people against a backdrop of smoke and the blasting sound systems powered by generators.
KOKOKO! have captured the essence of this ambience. Defying musical categorisation, their new sounds are the beating heart of the shady downtown Kinshasa clubs, a welcome escape from the harsh realities of everyday life.
"KOKOKO! radiate a raw and explosive energy." DJ Mag
"With their upcycled instruments and agit-punk beats, the Congolese collective kick against African music stereotypes." Guardian
