“We need to be able to see us”. That’s the key idea behind photographer Wasi Daniju’s portraits of black women, girls and non-binary people. Rebecca Omonira-Oyekanmi investigates, tells stories: there’s Carlington, who died in immigration detention, Rashan killed under police restraint. Join us for Rebecca and Wasi in conversation, discussing their work and the political context it operates within.
Rebecca was appointed the 2020 Stuart Hall Fellow at the University of Sussex, hosted by the School of Media, Film and Music. The Fellowship was created to honour the legacy of the influential Jamaican –British academic and cultural theorist.
Rebecca is an independent journalist. She co-edits Shine A Light, an award-winning investigative journalism and storytelling project and has written for a range of publications including the Guardian, the Washington Post, the New Statesman, the Independent, and Prospect magazine.
Wasi Daniju is a photographer working in portraiture, photojournalism, documentary photography, live performance and theatre.

Pay What You Decide
There is an allocation of Pay What You Decide (PWYD) tickets per show available to guests on a first-come, first-served basis. Come and see the show without paying anything in advance, and then pay what you think is appropriate at the end of the show. Maximum of four PWYD tickets per person. The concession rate is available for students, University of Sussex staff, Over 60s, and people in receipt of JSA or DLA/PIP. Proof of eligibility may be required on the door or at the box office (if collecting). The box office (phone line and drop-in service) is open from 10am to 4pm, Mondays to Fridays. The box office is also open one hour before the advertised show start time.
