About
University of Sussex Symphony Orchestra recreates its own especially vivid and exciting programme from – astonishingly – 50 years ago when they played as part of the opening season of the newly-opened Gardner Arts Centre on 8 December 1969.
Featuring pianist Shin Suzuma as soloist in Beethoven’s moving piano concerto on the Steinway piano. Shin is a former University of Sussex music student, and now an acclaimed pianist and composer.

Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 3
Stravinsky - Symphony in C
Shin Suzuma, solo piano
Jakob Masiak, leader
Professor Ed Hughes (Music – University of Sussex), conductor
Another University of Sussex alumnus, the author Ian McEwan, will join us for the evening to read aloud the programme notes he wrote for the original concert in 1969.
