New Queers on the Block: Dr Duckie's How to Build a Hope Machine
Utopia ain’t gonna build itself. Join Dr Duckie – aka Ben Walters – for a call to arms, based on his doctoral research with performance collective Duckie.
It's a 100,000-word thesis boiled down to an hour-long spiel guaranteed to blow your bloomin' mind. Aimed at community artists, grassroots activists and anyone with a sneaking suspicion things could be less shit, it unpacks world-making approaches to performance, cabaret, culture and care for so-called ‘marginalised’ communities.
It’s about the neoliberal wobble, the technology of queer fun, and doing family differently. It’s about the power of homemade mutant hope machines – ways of thinking, feeling and acting that build better worlds – right here, right now – one day, one show, one dance at a time. It’s full of ideas inspired by Duckie’s work with young LGBTQ+ performers, homeless people and older people, and relevant to anyone wanting to crack on with utopia.
The talk's about an hour, with time for questions, a natter or a barney after.
