About

Cristian Vogel / Squid - a public concert featuring University of Sussex alumni to celebrate the launch of the Jonathan Harvey Electronic Music Studio

Squid

Dubbed by the NME as ‘the weirdo-punk band making the avant-garde accessible’, this five piece band are on the rise in the UK and Europe. Eclectic, raw, rhythmically enticing, their enigmatic lyrics, electronic textures, punchy drumming and catchy guitar riffs are as compelling as they are hard to pin down. To quote Brighton’s Finest website, “Their wonky noise-pop is turning many-a-head”. Squid boasts four Sussex alums, and the ACCA is delighted to welcome them back on campus.

Cristian Vogel

“Spellbinding” and “individualistic to a fault” (Pitchfork), Cristian Vogel is a long term innovator in the composition, mixing and performance of electronic sounds. His work spans over 25 years in the vanguard of European electronic music, and is acknowledged as an outstanding influence in the fields of composition for stage, club culture and studio. He has lived in Brighton, Barcelona, Berlin and Geneva and is currently resident in Copenhagen where he continues to innovate technologically based music at the NeverEngine Labs studios. Cristian Vogel is a Sussex alum, having studied with Martin Butler and Jonathan Harvey in the 1990s. This evening gives a fascinating taste of his output, a must for fans and newcomers alike.

About Jonathan Harvey Electronic Music Studio

Tucked away up a curved flight of steps at the back of the ACCA cafe, is the brand new Jonathan Harvey Electronic Music Studio. Its opening marks an exciting new stage in the renovation of the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts. Formerly the Electronic Music Studio in the Gardner Arts Centre, this space had a productive existence as a creative recording studio for music students and staff at Sussex in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, before being closed for several years when the Gardner Arts Centre went dark. Now reborn as a state-of-the-art recording studio, we are excited to share its opening in a public event.

We will honour the memory and music of the late Professor Jonathan Harvey, to whom the space is dedicated, and celebrate the richness and variety of musical output by a vibrant gathering of Sussex music alumni and current students.

Join us for a compelling mix: installation, screening, DJ sets and concerts! The evening concert features sets by Squid and Cristian Vogel.
