Sussex University Drama Society presents A Clockwork Orange, but not as you know it. Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 film, based on Anthony Burgess’s novel, was a controversy-shrouded hit. Burgess went along with the whirlwind initially, but when the dust settled, he was far from happy with the film. Kubrick’s refusal to admit that the film glorified violence ended their once close friendship forever. With a desire to set the record straight, Burgess took to his typewriter once more to write the definitive story: A Clock-work Orange: A Play with Music.
Our show comes to you from an all-female production team who have worked fearlessly to deliver an unflinchingly critical and political interpretation. This semi-naturalistic, semi-dreamlike production is punctuated with physical theatre, dance and music. It thinks through the intricacies of gang culture, juvenile delinquency, toxic masculinity, morality and justice. Ultimately it probes the relationship between action and intent – if we prevent a man from being physically able to do wrong, does that make him good?
Our thanks go to Michael Attenborough – Michael’s wealth of expertise and generous support has allowed us to create a truly unique, professional grade production.
