Viriditas: Laura Cannell, Laura Spark & André Bosman - The Untuning of the Sky
The Untuning of the Sky is inspired by the ancient astrological idea of the Music of the Spheres ~ the theory that the revolution of the planets generates a celestial harmony of profound and transcendent beauty which mortals cannot hear.
Originally commissioned by York Mediale Festival in 2018, and premiered at The National Centre for Early Music, this new work changes with each outing, presenting semi-composed and semi-improvised music and live visuals based on ancient fragments of music including the compositions and illuminations of Hildegard von Bingen.
Composer/Performer Laura Cannell draws on fragments of medieval and renaissance music, which are then discarded and re-imagined into new works for violin, overbow violin and double recorders. Accompanied with oscillating electronics by André Bosman and in collaboration with visual artist Laura Spark, music and vision fall in and out of balance, exploring the spaces between harmony and discord. Scordatura tuning, birdsong and ancient astrological images align briefly throughout the performance before embracing their continuing momentum.
Part of Viriditas: the music and life of Hildegard von Bingen, a series of events exploring contemporary resonances of the music and life of the 12th century abbess and composer. Hildegard von Bingen (1098 - 1179), was a German Benedictine abbess, mystic, visionary, healer, naturalist, botanist, diplomat, feminist and not least, the first named, and most prolific, although untrained, composer of the middle ages.
