About

Suzanne Ciani

A five-time Grammy award nominated composer, electronic music pioneer and neo-classical recording artist, Suzanne Ciani is one of the most renowned female composers in the world. Over the course of her career she's released 15 solo albums, has been recognised as Keyboard Magazine's "New Age Keyboardist of the Year" and received the 2017 Moog Innovation Award. Following two sold out shows at Café OTO last year (her first ever performances in London), we welcome her back to the UK.

Martin Messier

Martin Messier is a composer, performer and videomaker. If sound stands as the driving force of his work, Messier also quickly took an interest in the clash between electroacoustic music and other art forms as well as in artistic collaboration. That way, it is through the relationship between sound and material (objects or bodies) that Messier’s work take shape.

In his latest project FIELD, Messier creates sounds using electromagnetic fields of our environment. These residual and imperceptible electric signals are picked with electromagnetic transducer microphones, and become generators of the performance. By a continuous movement of plugging and unplugging, Messier interacts with them, thus noise and light composition emerges. With FIELD, Messier makes material this flow of power otherwise inaudible and invisible. A mesmerising audio-visual treat.

9.45pm post show conversation with the artists, chaired by Dr. Evelyn Ficarra - Composer and Senior Lecturer in Music

Evelyn Ficarra is a composer and sound artist. Her work finds expression across a range of forms including music theatre, multi media, installation, dance, film and the concert hall. Throughout her career she has enjoyed collaborative work with choreographers, directors, filmmakers, and visual artists. Her musical ideas are often co-mingled with, or germinated from, extra-musical materials (words, images, sounds) which inform the development and shape of the music and leave their traces in it. In that sense, all her work is interdisciplinary at its core. In another sense, she is thoroughly single minded, hearing all sounds as music, understanding all time based structures (e.g. in film, dance, theatre) as forms of music, looking at all objects as potential sound sources for music.
