Chris Watson: No Man's Land

No Man’s Land is an audio installation celebrating the sounds, rhythms and music of the world’s seas and oceans.

A city-specific edit of a journey in sound, which takes the listener from the edge of Brighton’s beach and out with the ebbing tide to follow the tides and currents on a trackless voyage around the planet from the ocean floor. Weddell seals singing under Antarctic sea ice, the snap crackle and pop of a coral reef in the South China Sea, the haunting songs of humpback whales in the Caribbean through to hunting pods of orca in the North Atlantic before being swept back onto the pebbles by the remains of the West Pier.  No Man’s Land will be a spatialised audio journey of the imagination from within ACCA’s auditorium out into the deep ocean and the most ‘sound rich’ environments on the planet.

2017 Longplayer Conversation screening:

We will also screen the 2017 Longplayer Conversation in the Jane Attenborough Studio for visitors coming to experience No Man's Land. The event originally brought together Chris Watson with naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough and took place in November 2017 at the Knowledge Centre, British Library, London NW1. Open in conjunction with our cafe-bar opening hours which can be found here. Until 8 April only.

Chris Watson: No Man’s Land for D/deaf audiences:

The balloon is a way that D/deaf audiences can experience No Man’s Land via the medium of vibrations.

The membrane of a balloon is sensitive and it vibrates because the soundwaves from our  speakers are powerful, especially in the ‘ambisonic’ configuration that we will have our auditorium set up in for this installation.

You will be able to pick up a balloon at our box office before your visit if you would like to experience the work in this way.

For more information contact our box office in person 10am-4pm Monday to Friday or via 01273 678 822 /
