1968 was a year of social and political change across the globe; from the civil rights movements in the USA and the burgeoning anti-Vietnam war movements, to the global protest, student unrest and revolution.
A Grin Without A Cat is an essay-film by French artist and film maker Chris Marker. The work looks at the global turmoil of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the rise of the New Left in France and the development of socialist movements in Latin America. Using the image of Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire Cat, the title evokes a dissonance between the promise of a global socialist revolution (the grin) with its actual nonexistence.
This screening marks the opening of a series of events which will take place at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts throughout 2018 looking at power and protest, and marking 50 years since 1968.
