Beethoven String Quartet No 1 in F major, Op 18
Schumann String Quartet No 3 in A major, Op 41/3
František Souček violin
Petr Střížek violin
Petr Holman viola
Vladimír Fortin cello
Winner of a clutch of major awards, the Czech Zemlinsky Quartet explores the heyday of the string quartet repertory.
Full of energy, drama and craftsmanship, Beethoven’s Op 18 quartet launched one of the greatest cycles of music in the entire classical canon. Janácek’s jaunty evocation of youth, which is arranged from the wind sextet, bubbles with enthusiasm and fresh ideas, while Schumann’s quartet, written in just a few days during his ‘year of chamber music’, 1842, is a highly original homage to Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.
